Nicole and Molly in Africa, Journal 1, Nicole: Namibia
Greetings from Africa! I landed on May 4th in Windhoek, Namibia to visit Etosha National Park in the north, where we saw a good amount of wildlife, including black rhino, lions, and many other animals. My favorite part was our visit with the Himba, a nomadic herding tribe. They build their huts from the mud of termite mounds (mixed with cow dung). The women paint themselves with red ochre and butterfat, coating their hair and bodies. Since Namibia is very dry and they have little access to water, they smoke themselves every morning for 3 hours to keep clean. They then perfume themselves with the crushed seeds of the red-barked Comifera tree. They wear few clothes apart from a loincloth or a small goat skinned skirt and their jewelry is made from iron or shell.
Another area we visited for a couple of days was Damaraland, where we did some hiking in the Brandenburg mountains to see bush paintings done by the San people (bushmen) thousands of years ago. Camping there was beautiful - huge granite boulders in some areas and towering sandstone structures in others, all mixed with red-colored sand. Our final destination was the Namibian coast, where we visited a colony of Cape Fur Seals 150,000 strong and braved the hot Namib Desert. The red sand dunes are beyond imagination, in the Namib Desert you feel awestruck by the beauty and the grandness around you.
